Size, coat and colours

How big does a Jack Russell get?

Most sellers, and PetMD, quote 25 to 38 cm at the shoulder and about 6 to 8 kg. Some Russell Terriers are shorter-legged and lighter. Ask which type your puppy is. Ask to see the parents, or ask for their size.

Coat types and colours

Jack Russells have smooth, rough or broken coats. Most are mostly white with tan or black markings. A tri colour puppy is white with black and tan. The coat sheds a little all year.

Is a Jack Russell right for you?

Temperament and energy

Jack Russells are clever, bold and stubborn. They were bred to hunt, and many still chase anything that moves. They can bark, dig and chew when bored. A tired Jack Russell is a happy one. A bored one will redecorate your flat.

If you want a calm lap dog, look at a Maltipoo or a Maltese instead. If you want a dog to play with every day, a Jack Russell is great fun.

Jack Russells in a Dubai apartment

A Jack Russell can live in an apartment. The size is not the problem. The energy is. Plan two walks a day plus play and training games at home. In summer, walk early in the morning or late in the evening. Pavement gets hot enough to burn paws.

If the dog will be alone all day, this is probably not the right breed.

Jack Russells and children

Jack Russells suit active families with older children who know how to treat a dog gently. They can nip when handled roughly. Supervise young children. Many also have a high prey drive, so think twice if you keep a cat or other small pets.

Jack Russell care: exercise, grooming and health

Exercise

Expect at least an hour of activity a day. Mix walks with fetch, puzzle toys and short training sessions. Mental work tires a terrier as much as running does.

Grooming

The coat is easy. Brush once a week. A rough coat needs a stripping comb. Bathe every two to four weeks with a dog shampoo and clean the ears every two weeks. Need a hand? Ask about our pet grooming in Business Bay.

Health checks to ask about

Ask the seller and your vet about these common issues:

• Kneecap problems (patellar luxation)
• Lens luxation and other eye conditions
• Dental disease
• A heart defect called pulmonic stenosis

Book a vet check in the first week. Ask the seller for the vet records of the puppy and, if possible, of the parents.

Vaccinations, papers and Dubai registration

• [Vaccination and deworming record with dates]
• [ISO microchip]
• [Pet passport]
• [Dubai Municipality registration in your name]

Dubai requires every dog to have a microchip, a rabies vaccine and annual registration with Dubai Municipality. You need your Emirates ID to register. Dogs are not allowed in many public places in Dubai, and they must be on a leash where they are allowed.
